Porcelain Veneers – Northgate, WA

Covering Up Cracks and Discoloration

Ever wonder why the actors on television and in movies have perfect smiles? How do they keep their pearly whites looking so dazzling? In many cases, there’s a simple answer: they have porcelain veneers. These thin covers can mask a multitude of flaws on your teeth, and they’re not just for big-name stars. Your cosmetic dentists at Oak Tree Dental Care are more than happy to offer porcelain veneers in Northgate for patients who are self-conscious about their grins.

What are Porcelain Veneers?

Smiling womanPorcelain veneers, sometimes called dental veneers or just veneers, are thin coverings that are cemented to the front of your teeth. Though they’re usually made out of porcelain, they can also be made out of a composite resin; both materials are strong, durable, and translucent, which helps them mimic the appearance of natural teeth.

Veneers are used to correct many cosmetic flaws at once, such as:

  • Broken, cracked or chipped teeth
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Wide gaps
  • Teeth that are too short in relation to the gums
  • Crooked teeth
  • Stains or discoloration that can’t be improved with traditional whitening

Who’s a Good Candidate for Veneers?

Porcelain veneersIn general, veneers are used for more extensive cosmetic treatments. For example, if you have several tooth stains along with minor chips and slightly crooked teeth, veneers can fix all three problems at once.

You need to be in good oral health before you can get veneers, so gum disease and tooth decay will have to be treated first. Also, there needs to be plenty of enamel for the shells to bond to; a small amount of enamel will be removed, but an underlying layer will still remain.

It’s important to take care of your veneers much like you take care of your natural teeth. If you grind or clench your teeth at night, or if you habitually bite down on hard objects like fingernails, the issue needs to be addressed first. You’ll also need to continue brushing and flossing as you normally would.

The Process

Smiling manOnce we determine that you’re a good candidate for the treatment, we’ll prepare your teeth to make room for the veneers and take impressions of your mouth; we’ll also take a complete set of X-rays and photographs. These images are important for designing veneers that are the right size, shape and color for you. Two or three weeks after this initial appointment, you’ll return to our office to have your permanent veneers cemented in place.

Benefits of Porcelain Veneers

Patient shaking hands with dentist

  • Comfortable in the Mouth: Porcelain won’t irritate your gum tissues, so you’ll still be able to speak and smile comfortably.
  • Resistant to Stains: Porcelain isn’t porous like enamel is, so it’s harder for it to become stained and discolored.
  • Natural-Looking: Veneers are customized to match the size, shape and color of your other teeth.
  • Easy Maintenance: Taking care of veneers is similar to taking care of your other teeth – brushing, flossing, regular dental visits and so on – and doing so will help them last for as long as possible. In many cases, cared-for veneers have a lifespan of 15 years.
